The Daily Miner’s 1.6 Update Tutorial

Well, it’s that time again. That time when I bring you all you need to know about the 1.6 update so that you can spend minimal time researching! We have some exiting new features in 1.6, (also known as the “horse update”) and you can find their posts below in the links. (Alternatively, just scroll downwards)

I should note that in order to get this new update, you will need to install the new launcher, of which can be found on the Mojang blog here. The new launcher will automatically install new pre-releases and updates.

New Blocks and Carpets

With every new update comes new decoration blocks, and the 1.6 update does not fail to please.

To start, hardened clay blocks where added. You heard me. And you can dye them too. I swear, I’m not making this up!

T0 craft the block of coal you need to smelt a clay block. You can make the stained clay block shown above by surrounding the dye of your choice in hardened clay blocks. This produces 8 hardened clay blocks of that color.

Also added are hay bales and blocks of coal. Hay bales can be crafted using 9 wheat, and coal blocks with 9 coal.

Neither of them serve any function other then storage, however the coal block can also be used as fuel. 64 coal blocks provides the highest possible smelting time.Both blocks are flammable, as well.

And finally, Minecraft has worked hard to bring you carpets. Finally, this stuff is getting real! Carpets can be placed on top of any other block, and come in the same colors that wool blocks do. They can be crafted with 2 wool blocks.

How To: Horses and Pack Mules

Spend hours searching for a saddle and some horse armor

Find and tame a mule (Horses can be tamed by constant mounting)

Equip the mule with your hard earned horse armor and saddle (right click to open horse inventory. Mules cannot equip armor)

Create an unbreakable bond with your beloved mule

Get requested by your faction to bring diamonds to the base by the next moon

Equip a chest to your mule and fill said chest with diamonds (equip chest by right clicking)

Get attacked by an enemy faction mid-journey

Watch your mule die before your eyes

Lose everything

Get banned from the server

Leads and Name Tags

Okay, let’s get real here. I know that at some point in your Minecraft adventures that you have had the sudden urge to go nomad. And that’s okay, as nomad-ing has never been easier thanks to the addition of leads and name tags in the 1.6 update.

Leads, as the name suggests, are ropes that allow you to transport animals easily. Moderately difficult to make, they require 4 string and one slime ball. By right clicking an animal with a lead in your hand, a rope will be attached to it. The animal will now follow you wherever you go.

In the event you wish to keep the animal in one place, you have to attach the lead, again right clicking, to a fence post. The lead will rap around the post and the animal will not be able to leave. The lead can be useful for transporting tame horses if you do not yet have a saddle.

However, all mobs de-spawn after a given amount of time. In order to keep an animal around forever, you must, drum roll please, NAME IT! Ya! Applause… ya… name it… hehe…

If you find treasure chests in abandoned mine shafts or dungeons, there is a chance you’ll get a name tag. Using an anvil, you can rename the name tag wherever you like. Then, right click an animal, and it will be tagged will the name on the name tag! Brilliant! Now you can store pigs and such in pens as well as keep your horses alive.

1.6 Release Window

UPDATE: Minecraft 1.6 will be released on July 1st!

1.6 is in the horizon, and we have just received a new update: In a recent talk at DREAMHACK, Jeb revealed that the 1.6 update is going to be released shortly before July.

This means we should see it sometime in the next week, however it is possible that it may be released a little later. The 1.6 update includes horses, coal blocks, hay barrels, leads, and much more… but who needs the latest update? It’s time to look to the FUTURE!

Jeb says that 1.7 is probably going to be an update centered around biomes and oceans. Whales, anyone? Here’s what I want: dragon lairs. You know what? Why not. MISTY MOUNTAIN BIOME!

How Big Is Minecraft?

There’s no doubt about it: Minecraft is big. But exactly how big is it? Well in case you’ve ever pondered the boundaries of the world we all know and love, The Daily Miner has come to explain!

One block in Minecraft it approximately 1 cubic meter. In versions of Minecraft before the Adventure Update, the world would spawn a glitchy area known as the “farlands” 12,500,000 blocks from the center of the world. The farlands could crash players games or servers if players entered them.

In the current version on Minecraft, the world generates infinitely  however when you reach 30,000,000 blocks from the center of the world, blocks loose their physical properties. You can fall through them. Yes, really. The game will still crash, too.

Clearly you are never going to run out of space in Minecraft. Infact, as the surface area of Minecraft is 3,600,000,000,000,000 m2, you get about 7 times as much surface area as you do on Earth! (510,000,000 m2)

Minecon 2013

Minecon, the epic convention for any and all Minecraft players, is coming back to the US this year! It will be located somewhere along the East Coast, although the exact location has not been announced. Just for looks, lets take a peek at the East Coast so we can get our plane tickets and/or cars ready.

Pre-Order Starbound!

The upcoming game Starbound has been taking pre-orders and donations. They have already raised 1 million dollars thanks to a huge community that is providing a lot of support. You can purchase pre-orders for beta codes, forum badges, the actual game, (when it comes out) and even more at their official blog/website. Also, visit the actual donations page.

I am not sure if there is the donation page will close at any time, but the chances are it will. (eventually.) Also, keep in mind that all of these things, for the most part, are pre-orders. You can see the development of the game in this interactive roadmap.

Starbound is a game much like Terraria or Minecraft. I think it looks very cool, to say the least. It is space-themed, and you’ll be duking it out with other randomly-generated monsters and beasts with randomly-generated weapons on randomly-generated worlds. Swag, my friends. Swag.

Look me in the eye and tell me thats not awesome.

Chucklefish, the studio behind the game, have been working on it since 2012 at least, and I have been following it for a while. You should read the website for more information and details.

With infinit possibilities on an infinit amount of worlds, whats not to like? Ask yourself that question when you buy a donor package, stay cool, and as always, keep mining!

Mob Files: the Skeleton

The Skeleton, infamous for sniping out noobs on their first nights, roams the world of Minecraft at night. He thus becomes the 5th  mob in the club of all-nighter-surface-mobs along with the zombie, creeper, spider, and enderman. Having become even more scary and menacing in the latest update, The Daily Miner has come to inform you, yes YOU, on the stats, strategy, and spoils of this mob.

Stats: the Skeleton is a ranged mob. His only method of attack is to shoot arrows at the player, however in the event that he spawns without a bow he will attack the player in the same way the zombie does.

The skeleton has 10 hearts of health and deals 1.5 – 2 hearts of damage per arrow. He can hit you from 15 blocks away, and has deadly aim.

Strategy: the skeleton is a deadly foe, and totally capable of taking you out even if you have armor equipped. You should take caution if you do not have any iron armor, and make sure not to take on  skeletons in a pack. (sometimes they spawn in groups of 3 or more!)

The key is to hit in a way that keeps you from being shot. If you are being sniped and cannot find the skeleton shooting you, then I suggest you choose a direction and sprint as fast as you can. When you are 16 blocks away, the skeleton will loose interest. If you can see the skeleton, than charge and swing like crazy. Make sure to stay mobile by jumping around in order to… you know… not die.

If there is a zombie nearby, you can try to run behind it. If the skeleton shoots the zombie, they will turn against each other. Meat shield FTW!

Spoils: the skeletons drops consist mainly of bones, which make a lot of sense when you think about it. He also drops 0-2 arrows, making skeletons a semi-reliable source of ammunition on your early nights. There is a rare chance that he will drop a bow, although the bows dropped by skeletons are almost always heavily damaged.

 

 

 

By hitting a skeleton from a long distance away, you can earn an achievement. You need to hit the skeleton from pretty far away, so I suggest creating a tower leading high up into the sky and shooting the skeleton that lies below if you really want this achievement.
